What Is Canine Soft Tissue Sarcoma?

These tumors share similar behavior despite arising from different tissues, so oncologists often treat them as a group. What unites them is a tendency toward local invasiveness with a metastatic risk that depends heavily on grade: low- and intermediate-grade sarcomas spread infrequently, while high-grade sarcomas carry a substantially higher metastatic risk, on the order of 40%.

The Forms of Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Common types include fibrosarcoma (from fibrous connective tissue), peripheral nerve sheath tumor (from the cells surrounding nerves), hemangiopericytoma (from cells associated with blood vessels, a classic limb sarcoma), myxosarcoma (a mucin-rich, often ill-defined sarcoma), and liposarcoma (the malignant fat-derived form). Despite their different origins, they are grouped together because they behave similarly and are treated similarly.

Standard Treatment and What It Costs

Wide surgical excision is the mainstay — the goal is to remove the tumor with a generous margin of healthy tissue to catch those microscopic tentacles — at $1,500 to $4,000 depending on size and location. Radiation therapy ($5,000 to $9,000 for a definitive course) is used when surgery can't achieve clean margins, to control microscopic disease left behind. Chemotherapy (doxorubicin) at $3,000 to $5,000 is reserved mainly for high-grade tumors with real metastatic potential. Metronomic chemotherapy, low-dose oral therapy to delay local recurrence after incomplete removal, carries an ongoing lower cost. A relatively new treatment that is being increasingly used is electrochemotherapy. This can be used on gross disease, or as adjuvant therapy to treat incompletely excised tumors to decrease the risk of recurrence. A recent paper Published in VCO (R. Sofia,  M. Michael,  P. Gerry, et al., “ Surgery and Adjuvant Electrochemotherapy Compared to Surgery Alone for Treatment of Canine Incompletely Excised Soft Tissue Sarcomas,” Veterinary and Comparative Oncology (2026):  1–8, https://doi.org/10.1111/vco.70088.) demonstrated that surgery alone resulted in a 68% relapse rate, while surgery followed by ECT reduced recurrence to only 33%. Prognosis is genuinely good for low- and intermediate-grade tumors that are completely removed — many dogs are effectively cured. The difficulty comes with tumors in tricky locations, where wide margins are impossible, and with high-grade tumors, where recurrence and spread are real risks. Those are the cases where radiation, chemotherapy, and trials matter most.

Clinical Trials: What Is Being Studied

Electrochemotherapy combines chemotherapy with electrical pulses that help drugs penetrate tumor cells — useful for local control of tumors that are hard to remove. Intratumoral and immunotherapy approaches inject agents directly into the tumor or mobilize the immune system to improve local control and reduce recurrence. Novel radiation protocols refine delivery to spare healthy tissue while controlling microscopic disease. And targeted kinase inhibitors — oral drugs aimed at the signaling pathways driving high-grade sarcomas — are under active study.
